Employees at River Rock Casino vote to join BCGEU

December 23, 2015

Employees at River Rock Casino have voted overwhelmingly to join the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU). Workers there voted 96 per cent in favour of joining the BCGEU.

The new certification to be issued by the Labour Relations Board will include 700 workers including dealers, slot attendants, supervisors, guest services, cashiers and the count team.

"We are very happy with the tremendous support our new members have shown us," said Stephanie Smith, BCGEU president.  "This is an exciting opportunity for these casino workers. We will be electing a bargaining committee, electing stewards and meeting with members to get their input for bargaining proposals. Our new bargaining committee should be at the table by late February with Great Canadian Casino to negotiate a first agreement. In the meantime, we will continue our efforts to organize more groups at Great Canadian Casino to enable the representation of as many employees as possible in this first round of bargaining."

The BCGEU represents most unionized casinos in British Columbia. River Rock Casino is the largest casino in the province.
