Next week your union’s Provincial Executive (PE) will be meeting in Prince George. The PE is your union’s governing body between conventions.
The PE is made up of your four executive vice presidents, 11 component vice presidents, 2nd representatives from the four largest components, treasurer Paul Finch and myself. Our role is to discuss the issues that are important to you, to establish union policies and goals that grow and strengthen your 68,000-member union.
There’s always plenty to discuss and decisions to be made.
Although the majority of BCGEU members may be located in Victoria and the lower mainland, we know you live and work in every part of the province. That’s why we’ll be in Prince George next week.
In addition to our two days of meetings, members of the PE will also be conducting worksite visits in and around Prince George. It’s a great opportunity for us to meet members in their worksites and find out what matters to you.
We’ve also planned a family event for next Wednesday night at Prince George’s Exploration Place Museum and Science Centre. We’re expecting about 150 members and their families to join us. They’ll be able to explore the museum, meet with members of the PE and other union members from Prince George. We’ll have some great food and refreshments there and spend time getting to know each other. Last year’s family event in Prince George was great fun and we expect even more members to attend this year.
We’ll also be honouring and saying farewell next week to Lori Joaquin, vice president of Component 12 - Administrative Services. Lori has been a crucial member of our PE, and a tireless union activist for nearly three decades. Next week’s PE meeting is her last as she heads off to a well-earned retirement. We’re happy for her…but also sad to see her go.
All in all, we’ve got lots planned for next week. As always, I’m looking forward to meeting as many of you up in Prince George as possible.
